All talk when it comes to renewable energy

For years now, we have heard how Bangladesh is among the most vulnerable countries to the adverse effects of climate change, and that we must take the necessary steps in order to safeguard ourselves in the future. A transition to renewable energy was unquestionably among the more important steps that Bangladesh needed to ensure.

To that end, despite years and years of hearing about the importance of renewable energy for our future, it is truly disheartening to learn that, according to an analysis by the Bangladesh Independent Power Producers' Association (BIPPA), only 0.8% of the total power produced in Bangladesh is from renewable energy -- the lowest in the region, and far lower than compatriot nations such as India and Pakistan.

While we do acknowledge that shifting to renewable energy is not an easy task, and that Bangladesh requires far more time and resources to successfully start making this transition, that less than one percent power is generated from renewables is simply inexcusable.

That even our hydro-electric power generation falls so short of other nations is yet more disappointment, with all of it pointing to one unfortunate reality -- that Bangladesh has made little to no progress when it comes to creating a foundation for alternative sources of power generation beyond fossil fuels.

It is clear that in order for us to even begin making any strides, there will need to be strong and dedicated support from the public sector. Beyond having the right policies and incentives in place for investment in renewable energy, we also need to ensure oversight so that potential future projects are completed, and we see progress.

We are being left in the dark when it comes to power generation. This cannot continue.
