Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development sent an open letter to chief adviser Muhammad Yunus on Sunday recommending a set of 16 changes in the energy and power sector for ensuring good governance and eliminating corruption. The recommendations included immediate repeal of the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act, 2010, formation of an independent public inquiry commission, making it mandatory to release initial environmental examinations and environmental impact assessment reports, implementing ‘no electricity no payment’ in power plants, cancellation of all fossil fuel-based power plants whose construction has not yet begun, cancellation of approved and proposed new LNG terminal constructions, adoption of a renewable energy master plan, increase the allocation for the renewable energy sector to Tk 500 crore, waive excessive tax and vats on renewable energy equipment and tools, and reduce import duties and registration fees for hybrid vehicles by at least 30 per cent and for electric vehicles by at least 50 per cent. A copy of the open letter was also sent to power and energy adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, finance adviser Saleh Uddin Ahmed, environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and law, justice and parliamentary affairs adviser Asif Nazrul.
