PHP Family – a leading industrial conglomerate in Bangladesh – is planning to add a new dimension to the country’s solar energy sector. The company has taken an initiative to generate its own electricity by installing solar panels on the roofs of its textile and steel mills. In the initial phase, solar panels with a total capacity of 1,740KW will be installed in these two mills.  The target is to generate around 2,000MW of electricity from these panels annually. This in turn would help reduce carbon emissions by 1,100 tonnes. Shafiqur Rahman Khan, an official of PHP Family, said, “We are planning to install solar panels on the roofs of our other establishments in the coming days. By doing this, it will be possible to cover a significant portion of the company’s total electricity from its own sources.” Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, director of United International University's Energy Research Center and renewable energy expert, welcomed this PHP Family initiative. It should be noted that solar energy is an environmentally friendly energy source, which helps reduce carbon emissions, and the impacts of climate change.
