This is the second consignment of uranium to reach the country's first nuclear power plant within a week, reports our Pabna correspondent. The transport of the radioactive fuel was conducted following all necessary security and safety measures, sources at the power plant said.

Rosatom, the nuclear energy corporation of Russia, is building the 2,400MW power plant, and its first unit, with a 1,200MW capacity, is set to be operational next year. The first consignment reached last Friday and was officially handed over to the power plant in a ceremony yesterday, which was joined virtually by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin. A total of seven fuel consignments for Unit-1 of the power plant will be delivered over the next few weeks, according to senior power plant officials. "A total of 163 nuclear fuel assemblies will be needed for operating Unit-1 in the initial stage. Ahead of Unit-1 operation, 168 nuclear fuel assemblies will reach the Roopppur plant over the next few weeks," Shawkat Akbar, project director of Rooppur Power Plant, told the Daily Star this morning.
