Transparency International Bangladesh on Sunday urged a new national energy plan prioritising renewable energy and eliminating the influence of fossil fuel lobbies.
The TIB came up with the demand at a human chain organised in front of the Jatiya Sangsad building in Dhaka marking International Clean Energy Day 2025.
The organisation also called for the cancellation of the current fossil fuel-dependent energy master plan.
TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said, ‘To honour our national and international clean energy commitments, we must free our energy policy from vested interests.’
The TIB advocates for a new energy strategy targeting 100 per cent renewable energy-based electricity production by 2050, he said.
Iftekharuzzaman urged the interim government to include unbiased experts and stakeholders in developing this renewable energy-focused plan.
TIB is marking International Clean Energy Day for the first time in Bangladesh under the theme ‘Clean Energy for a Sustainable Future.’
TIB organised awareness campaigns in 45 districts, with participation from partner organisations, and held programmes including rallies, human chains, and discussions on raising awareness about renewable energy.
TIB also recommended the cancellation of the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan 2023 and proposed creation of an independent oversight authority to ensure accountability in energy decision-making.
The organisation also called for strengthening the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority to lead the transition to clean energy.
TIB’s efforts align with global initiatives to combat climate change and advance sustainable energy, urging Bangladesh to take a significant step toward a greener future, said a TIB press release.
