Current Status: Operational (Unverified Grid Supply)
Beanibazar 20 MW Gas Power Plant, also known as BPGCL Gas Power Plant, is a reciprocating engine-based on grid power plant situated in Beanibazar Upazila in Sylhet District of Bangladesh (Location: Exact location Missing) The power plant is a Captive Power Plant (CPP) and Commercial IPP sponsored by Beanibazar Power Generation Company Ltd (BPGCL).
Capacity
The power plant's installed (gross) and derated (net) capacity will be 20 MW.
Context
In 2018, the privately funded Beanibazar Power Generation Company Ltd (BPGCL) submitted a proposal to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and requested permission from authorities to finalize a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) (Daily Sun 2019). Although it was constructed as a captive power plant, BPGCL wants to sell power to Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB). But the approval is yet to be given.
Fuel Supply
BPGCL signed a Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) with Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System Limited (JGTDSL) to get the required 4.5 MMSCFD (Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day) of DFG per day (JGTDSL 2019).

Power Generation
It has been found that the power plant’s installed capacity is 20 mw. According to officials, the previously suggested electricity distribution plan required the installation of a transmission line extending to Srimangal. In response to that situation, BPGCL had proposed delivering power from the plant to Moulvibazar (Daily Sun 2019).
Environment
According to Section 12 of the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act 1995, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is obligatory for any industry (MOLJPA 1995). Polluting industries, such as power plants, must undergo an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and EIA as directed in the Environmental Conservation Rules 1997 (superseded by ECR 2023) (MOEFCC 1997). DFG, mainly methane with potential other hydrocarbons, is a fossil fuel. Using it for electricity produces harmful pollutants (CO2, NOx, CO, VOCs, PM) affecting human health and causing air pollution. Lack of an EIA report for this power plant is concerning. Implementing a carbon tax and transitioning to renewables is a more environmentally responsible option. According to the environmental conservation rule 2023 the project falls in the “0range” indicating it as a significant project for the environment (MOEFCC 2023).
